Similar magazine double page layout (to own magazine)

This is a double page spread of 'LimeLight', which is a free magazine. I like this layout of the double page spread, which is very similar to my own flat plan of a double page spread. From looking at these pages for the double page spread, the page works well due to the fact that it's a group of girls it brings their personalities across to the audience. I will be using similar page set out for my own magazine, however the colour of the background will differ from one you can see in 'Limelight'. I love the way in which the pictures are put across the page, as it gives it another element. This is not the convention of music magazine to present the double page spread of such sort. I want to present my layout of my magazine in such a way due to the fact that I want my audience to capture and get a close insight of my chosen artist (Paiidz). It would also make my magazine look unique and engaging.

Analysing front cover for artist manager

This is a magazine cover which I have analysed for  my artists manager. This would remind me to ensure that I do the things listed in my own magazine.

Why I chose my interview questions

I chose to have such questions due to the fact that I thought it would be interesting to get further insight of the artist (Paiidz), in order to make my double page spread and front cover stand out. This in itself would break down the wall, making audience feels closer to the artist (relationship). I conducted a small survey asking my audience what sort of facts they wanted to know from Paiidz hence why some of the questions are asked.

Quick update (meeting artist)

I will be meeting my artist (Paiidz) tomorrow, in order conduct an interview as well as taking photographs. In order to prepare,I have taken a few practice photographs as I want to develop and in hence my photography skills. I have also created a list of questions in which I will be asking my artist. Such preparations will help me to be much more organized, as well has helping me to have an idea, as to who the final product would turn out. I am excited to meet my artist tomorrow!

Shot list

This is my shot list I have created before taking my photographs. This is done in order to give me some ideas of the type of shots I could use, helps me to be better prepared.

Recreating my flat plans (front cover/ double page spread)

This is the front cover of my music magazine (flat plan). I have changes the colours slightly (yellow, purple and black). I have used the colour wheel in order to ensure that my colour scheme works well together (done by using the colour wheel). There will be no text boxes (although in my flat plans, text boxes can be seen. I used this as a guide line, but due to the fact that I pressed too hard with my pencil lines , I was not able to rub it out completely. Sorry!) Inaddition, I will not be using all the colours that are visible in the text boxes. so in other words, not that many colours will be used on the front cover. Lastly for the front cover, the name of the artist "Paiidz" would be much bolder and bigger when it comes to me actually creating it.
In terms of my double page spread, when it comes to be creating the actual magazine, I will ensure to make the main image lager. This could be done by making the image take over about two columns. Or the other possibility is to make my artist take up the whole of the columns, rather than only half. In addition to the double page spread, I will make the tile much lager and stand out so that it's eye catching. By having the title much larger, this would contrast the standfirst which would be a little bit smaller than the title. This would overall, give it a nice element.

Practice shoots

I asked my models, what they thought hip hop was and this is some of the ideads they came up with. I wanted to know what sort of poses they thought suited the genre of hip hop. I wanted to know how this would differ when I take my own shots, when directing my artist.

Colour wheel

I will using this colour wheel to base it on my magazine. The colour wheel works by using opposites.

The color wheel is based a wheel with pie pieces of the following colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. (Sometime there are in between colours such as red-orange and green-blue) the primary colours are red, yellow and blue; they make a triangle on the wheel. The secondary colors are orange, green, and purple; they make an upside down triangle on the wheel. Each colour that is opposite, is directly below it such as red and green, orange and blue, and yellow and purple.
Orange,Green, and Purple are the secondary colours.
The colors across from each other on the colour wheel are complimentary colours Red and Green,Orange and Blue, and Yellow and Purple, they are called complimentary because they make the other colour stand out.

Professional photographer at hand

Today we had a privilege of having a professional photographer coming into our lesson and teaching us how to use ours cameras accurately. We went through some of the basic of Photoshop e.g. how to make someone's face smooth, as well as learning the basic of using our cameras. We were told that it was better for our camera to be set as manual, rather than auto as you can have more control over your camera (setting of manual), while as auto setting meant that the camera was controlling itself, not giving you enough control. Next we were told that it would be better if he actually plan out our photos before actually taking that particular photographs, as it meant that it's more likely that you would end up with number of usable photographs in our music magazines. This is one of the plannings that I will be doing before taking my own photographs. I thought this was a very useful hint, as it meant that we were planning ahead and so therefore making it easier for both the artist and the photographer. Lastly we were given useful websites and some famous photographers names, which I will defiantly be looking at for inspiration. The whole experience was amazing and I thank my teachers who helped to make this happen, so a big THANK YOU from me. :)

Feedback concerning flat plans:

From my flat plans feedback I will be doing the following:

  • To have the main image to be clear to the audience.
  • I will be creating a shot plan list, in order to ensure that I have good standard photographs.
  • Personally, I will try to use the colour wheel in order to make sure that the colour scheme works well together. (Previously, the colours that I used for my flat plan were black, white and yellow). I have then used the colour wheel and will be trying the following colours, yellow, purple and green. I will be doing this to see if such colours would suite my music genre.
  • Lastly I have been told to change and play around with my double page spread, which I will be doing. I will still have the same images going across the top of my double page spread, but this time I will need to insert some form of pull quote and description.
But overall I was very pleased with my feedback from my flat plan. This comes down to the fact that my genre of music came across very clear, which was very important.  :). I will be posting my new flat plans very soon.

This is the contents page.
This is the double page spread. I will also me scanning in my flat plans, as my images are not very clear.

Update, taking photos

I have been preparing the type of shots that I will be trying out with my artist. I will be taking more photographs of some students at my college, in order to ensure that my photography skills will be of a good standard when my artist comes in on the 30th of January. I will be posting these photographs some times this week. If you are interested in being one of my test models, please let me know. Thank you.  :)

Anaylsing different music magazine

I will be looking at the conventions of different music magazines. The reason as to why I will be doing so, is due to the fact that for my flat plan I was completing today, I wanted to see how music magazines were in some ways in which they are similar and how they differ. Look out for that, I will be posting it this week some time. Let me know what magazine you want me to analyse. Thank you :)

Getting in touch!

I was very pleased to hear from one of the artists that I got in touch with, was able to be featured in my own music genre. So excited, can't wait!!!

Female HIP-HOP Artist (Paiidz)

Paiidz is an up coming artist, she lives in South London. I have added her on blackberry messenger. I am waiting her response if she will feature in my own music magazine. I hope she says yes *finger crossed*

Bristish Female Artist (HIP-HOP)

I have tweeted this artist and have asked her if she would feature in my magazine. I am waiting for her response. So keep out for that ;)

Designing my flatplan

This week, we as a class will be designing our flatplan. These are the things I must remember to include:
·         I will be taking a good quality image, so that I will not need to crop or resize the image.
·         Take at least four images. I personally will be taking more than four images, to have more variety.
·         To make sure that my flat plan matches my final product (should be able to recognise the drawing to the final magazine).
·         Detailed description of text, colours I will be using for my magazine (black, white, gold/yellow).
·         Should show how my research has influenced my flat plan e.g. the colours used.
·         The artist I will be featuring (if I find an artist).

Focus Group for HIP-HOP magazine

In addition to this, the people I asked in my focus group quoted that "I will buy a magazine, if a female artists was featured in that particular magazine, especially in the case of HIP-HOP magazine, as it's not the norm for female artists to be featured both on the front cover and double page spread. It would help young up coming artists to know that it's not all about revealing your body parts in order to sell magazines. A woman can be covered up and still look sexy, as well as selling their music on magazine covers."  I was surprised to hear this response from my audience, this is due to the fact that whilst I was conducting my survey, most of the people I had asked stated that "women were sexualised in order to sell magazines, they are used as props rather than an artist". This is normally shown by having a dominate male artist such as Jay-Z, holding the woman by the waist. In this sense, the woman looks to have been placed in order to sell the magazine. For my own music magazine, I will be featuring an up coming female artist, and therefore will try to portray that a female artist can be hard core and still be sexy and at the same time sell magazines. My focus group overall has helped me to finalize my decision of having a female artist, as I wasn't sure if my magazine will sell if such artist was to be featured.

Analysing HIP-HOP as a whole, why I chose to go with this genre

What have I learnt from looking at Grazia magazine? (language)

• Language used, must be of standard in order for magazine to look professional.
 • Use drop caps, in order to inform reader where to start reading
• Pull quote used to attract reader. Also to give an insight of what the article will include.
 • Angle of gaze to make the more personal relationship between reader and artists •
Alliteration.
 • Narrative style interview- engaging.
•Background information- reader can have information about the artist- relate to the artist
 • Stand first- give reader what article would be about- dull reader in.
 • Chatty- makes it modern.
  • Rhetorical questions – interesting. i will try to use these in my magazine.

Getting noticed!

  • This is "Ace Hood",his genres includes R&B, HIP-HOP as well as RAP. He has been signed to number of record labels, both major and Indie.
  • These includes Def Jam (signed since 2008- till present- major record label), also signed to Universal Republic (signed in 2012-major record label) and Cash Money (signed 2012-indie record label.
  • However works alongside major record labels such as Republic Records-Distributor). Through my research, I have found out that it's hard for an artists to get signed, to big major labels unless they have previously signed to another record label or for their sample of music must be of good quality.
  •  I have been looking and researching all day into UK HIP-HOP artist, as it's my chosen music genre. In the UK, there is not much market for HIP-HOP genre, as it's based more in the America, meaning that UK artists such as "Rizzle Kicks" (UK HIP-HOP artists) being signed by Universal Island. Universal Island is mostly based in the US, although there are many branched around the world such as UK, Germany and Australia.
This is Travi$ Scott. He is HIP-HOP artits who is signed to Good Music which is an Indie label run by Kanye West. Travi$ Scott was signed in 2012 of last year.
